I had planned on just making one, but I found this jute burlap bag at the dollar store and I figured I'd just fancy it up. It was a dollar.. and hey, it saves me a little bit of time. Yes, I do realize I could just give her a plastic grocery bag and be done with it, but what fun is that!?
Anyways, here's how I made this.

I rummaged through my scraps and found orange and black.
I cut the black piece about 5 inches wide and at least double the length of the front of the bag.
Then, cut two 4 inch wide strips of the orange fabric, same length as the black.
I serged the one side of the orange fabric (because it frayed so easily). You could leave it raw (like I did for the black) or fold it under and hem.
Ruffle your strips. Using the highest tension and longest stitch and don't backstitch at the beginning or end. With some fabrics, it will ruffle itself, otherwise to help it ruffle more, just pull on those bottom strings to tighten.
Put the fabric aside and get a paper doily and a black felt marker or black fabric marker.
Figure out where you would like to stencil and start filling in the holes with your marker. Be careful not to move the doily around.
Let dry for a few minutes. (If it's fabric marker you'll let it set overnight.. but you should be able to finish the bag first)
Now hot glue on your ruffled strips.

And voila! C'est fini! You are done.
I'm in love with the doily stencil.. in fact I have another project coming up where I used it!
And what little girl doesn't love ruffles!?
I admit, it isn't completely festive.. but it's black and orange.. so it's good enough for me. Or her, I mean.
Have fun! See you all tomorrow!
